I built my first bicycle trailer in 2005. It was crude, but strong, and more useful than I imagined. I realized that I would never need a car or truck to move things ever again. Now, I build heavy cargo trailers so other people can escape the "need" for motor vehicles. Not only do I enjoy the welding and other metalworking aspects of building trailers, it is very satisfying to think that each trailer sold equals one less car on the road and one more self-sufficient cyclist. I still do all my gathering by bicycle, including using my original trailer to transport metal for building new trailers. The picture at right shows me hauling over 200 feet of steel tube, enough to build about 5 trailers. I share a metalworking shop with two other people in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. While most of my work revolves around bicycles, we have the tools and knowledge to tackle many small fabrication and machining projects. |
